MINI Cooper Convertible was the first ever production drop top to bear the British automaker's name. Like the rest of the MINI lineup, the Convertible is available in base, John Cooper Works, Cooper S trims.
Cooper Convertible is powered by 1.6 liter four cylinder motor delivering 121 horse powers at 6,000 rpm and 114 pound feet of torque at 4, 2500 rpm. MINI also swapped out smaller fog lamp housings for larger fog lamps, and rear now features LED brake and stop lights.
The Cooper Convertible also gains bit of extra safety with BMW developed dynamic brake light, which lights up brighter when the brakes are pushed harder.
Again retaining its basic retro inspired interior theme, MINI gets new radio and climate controls and some upgraded interior materials.
When sipping fuel is not your primary concern, MINI Cooper Convertible offers Sport mode with the push of button. MINI developed an extra stiff chassis for convertible, which provides sharp handling, good crash protection.
In case the standard options aren't enough for you, MINI has added something entirely new known as MINI yours, which allows further customization. New for the 2012 model year is MINI yours, customization line that allows unique upholstery, exterior colors, and interior surfaces.
If you’re after a sporty compact with four seats, cute styling, and loads of street cred, then MINI Cooper may be to your liking. If, however, your driving needs also require sun on your face and the wind in your hair then MINI Cooper Convertible is the ideal car for you.
Common to the MINI lineup, Cooper Convertible comes in several different trims starting with the base model. If you like bit of performance we strongly recommend going for the mid level Cooper S, which gets turbocharged version of 1.6 liter base engine good for 181 horsepower, or range topping John Cooper Works (JCW) model, which also sports turbocharged 1.6 liter engine but with 208 h.p. output.
Like other Minis, Convertible is spacious for front seat passengers, uncomfortable at best for rear seat passengers, and chock full of quirky design, sometimes cheap feeling interior materials. Optional upgrades include the aforementioned appearance moods; Premium package with automatic climate control, rain sensor, auto dimming mirror, automatic headlights; pair of Sport packages with wheels, stripes, traction control upgrades; and Technology package with MINI Connected or MINI Connected with navigation, rear park sensors ,Harmon Kardon sound system.
Mini Cooper Convertible comes standard with four airbags. Anti lock ABS brakes are standard, as are Electronic Brake Force Distribution and Cornering Brake Control. Neither the NHTSA nor IIHS has yet rated the 2012 MINI Cooper Convertible.
