Audi on Monday took the cover off its new A5 DTM competitor at the Frankfurt motor show. Audi combined a carbon-fiber monocoque and a steel cage to create the A5 DTM's chassis, which also gets a carbon-fiber body. More than 50 parts are identical in all DTM cars built by Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz as part of the 2012 regulations.
The body of a 2012 DTM car is designed to improve the car's performance in the slipstream and to be stronger for car-to-car contact, according to Audi.
In the midst of Frankfurt Motor Show and all its amazing new cars, this new Audi A5 DTM race car still manages to grab some attention.
The coupe Audi DTM racer sits lower and wider than the previous car, and on the whole looks much cooler. The combination of a carbon fiber monocoque and steel cage sets new standards in terms of safety for a race touring car.
Being the perfect place to unveil a new competitor, Audi presented to the public their 2012 A5 DTM at the Frankfurt Motor Show, rivaling with Mercedes’ version which was also under the “same” roof at the German event.
After being just a rumor along with some sketches presented to the public by the automaker, Audi decided it’s time to reveal its new DTM car for 2012, the A5, known internally as the R17, which the Germans say it delivers 455 horsepower from its racing V8 engine sitting on a carbon fiber monocoque chassis, along the high-strength steel roll cage.
