The Toyota Camry Hybrid has always been the proverbial black sheep, especially in comparison to its much more exalted and celebrated low emission cousin Prius. Moreover, the automaker has also revamped the oft ignored interior, of course along with a more powerful drive-train to complement the whole low emission driving experience.
The complementing electric setup comes with 105 kW output (140 hp) at 4,500 rpm and 199 lb-ft. of torque from nil to 1,500 rpm. The total hp comes at around 200 with substantial torque for optimum driving experience. Furthermore in relation to its electric attributes, the car incorporates a compact nickel metal hydride battery pack for sustained power output without spatial predicaments.
Toyota has fully redesigned its Camry mid-size sedans for 2012, and it expects more shoppers than ever to opt for the Camry Hybrid.
The 2012 Camry Hybrid inherits all the latest Hybrid Synergy Drive developments that made their debut in the current-generation Toyota Prius; and just as in the Prius, the Toyota Camry Hybrid can run for a short distance on electric power alone under some conditions. It packs an Atkinson-cycle (high-compression-ratio) version of the Camry's 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, plus the hybrid drive system—altogether making 200 horsepower. All the goodness of the rest of the 2012 Toyota Camry package translates to the Hybrid.
The 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid doesn't aim to find out, either. An improved regenerative braking system that converts more braking energy into electricity also helps the new Camry Hybrid achieve an EPA-estimated 41 mpg in combined driving, and a substantial 10 mpg gain in city driving.
Suspension improvements have also been made to enliven the Camry Hybrid's handling dynamics. The 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid will be offered in LE and XLE trim levels.
The XLE adds 17-inch alloy wheels, heated exterior mirrors, chrome garnishments, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, an eight-way power driver seat and the six-speaker Display Audio system featuring a 6.1-inch touchscreen and Bluetooth audio streaming.
Option packages -- available only on the XLE -- offer features including a sunroof; a rearview camera; heated driver and passenger seats; four-way power passenger seat; the Display Audio system integrated with a navigation system, HD Radio, satellite radio, voice recognition, Entune integration of smartphone and Web functions; and a premium 10-speaker JBL audio system with all of the Display Audio features integrated with a 7-inch touchscreen hard-drive-based navigation system.
The 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid offers a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 156 hp and 156 pound-feet of torque. Toyota says the Camry Hybrid will return an estimated 43 city mpg/39 highway mpg and 41 mpg combined.
